BEAR, Del. — A quick thinking firefighter jumped into action to rescue a young girl who fell into icy waters in Bear, Delaware.

It happened around 4:00 p.m. at the Meridian Crossing development off Church Road. The girls, believed to be about 10 years old, were walking on the ice on a semi-frozen pond, when a resident spotted them, and tried to get them to get off — but it was too late. One of the girls fell in.

“She kept walking further and further out and she just went through so I just started screaming for my son-in-law who thank God was home,” said Nancy McConnell, witness. McConnell called her son-in-law, who happens to be a volunteer firefighter and also lives in the complex.
