PICKENS COUNTY, S.C. — Three firefighters were injured Monday morning after their fire truck overturned, trapping firefighters in the wreckage.
WYFF4 reported that the driver of the Pumpkintown Fire Department’s 2,000 gallon tanker truck was answering a call for a structure on fire and the driver lost control in a curve trying to avoid a deer in the road.
All three firefighters on board were hurt, according to the report.
They suffered non-life-threatening injuries and all firefighters were conscious and talking after the wreck, according to the report.
One of the firefighters was able to get out and call for help. A second firefighter managed to get out on his own and a third firefighter required extraction equipment to free him from the wreck, but he was talking the whole time, according to the report.
The firefighter extricated from the truck was flown to a hospital.
The tanker truck involved in the wreck is a complete loss and the department said a new 2,000 gallon tanker will have to be purchased to replace what was their main one, according to the report.
In the meantime, they will continue to protect the fire district through mutual aid agreements with several nearby fire departments, according to the report.
