Hit-and-run driver kills Cleveland cop, fire truck totaled

Officer David Fahey, 39, was setting out flares near the crash scene when a driver struck him and fled the scene

CLEVELAND — A Cleveland police officer was struck and killed while setting out flares near a crash scene involving a fire truck Tuesday morning.

The Rocky River Fire Department responded to a single-car crash on a highway shortly after 5 a.m. At around 5:30 a.m., a van struck the fire truck. The driver of the van was pronounced dead at the scene, while a passenger was transported to the hospital, reported Cleveland19.

Rocky River Fire Chief Aaron Lenart said the rig was hit from behind and will be taken out of service. No firefighters were injured as a result of the crash.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol responded to investigate the crash with the fire truck. Officer David Fahey, 39, was setting out flairs near the crash scene when a white Toyota Camry struck him and fled the scene.

A 44-year-old man was arrested 30 miles west of Cleveland, where the vehicle that struck Officer Fahey was found, reported the Bristol Herald Courier.

An investigation into the fatal crash is underway.
