NORTH PORT, Fla. — The city’s new fire station has been named a finalist in the 2010 Sustainable Florida Best Practice Awards for its use of energy-efficient building materials.

The Collins Center for Public Policy, the organization behind the initiative, recently recognized the facility in its “green” building category.

For the last 13 years, the center has honored businesses, organizations and individuals whose work “demonstrates that a healthy environment and a healthy economy are mutually supportive.”

Fire Station 82, on North Port Boulevard, was the city’s first facility to be designated a “green” building. The station uses various energy-efficient measures, including soy-based insulation and low-flow water fixtures.

Winners will be announced next month.
