Webbing can be used to rescue both civilians and firefighters. One method is to tie a girth hitch around the victim and drag him out of the building. The girth hitch also can be used to lift the person up or down a set of stairs.
Sometimes the length of webbing is too long for the drag or lift and needs to be shortened on the spot. Doing this is a matter of tying a simple overhand knot. This is the easiest knot to tie with firefighting gloves on, but will still take some practice.
