SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Members of the Sacramento Fire Department lined up to honor a fallen firefighter who was killed in a helicopter crash.
Daniel Laird, a Tahoe National Forest helitrack captain, was killed in a helicopter crash in the Sam Houston National Forest in Texas.
“Tragedies of this nature serve as a reminder of the honorable work and sacrifices made by men and woman like Daniel,” Vicki Christiansen, U.S. Forest Service chief, said. “They commit themselves daily to supporting and protecting our communities around the country.”
Laird, a 23-year veteran of the U.S. Forest Service, leaves behind a wife and a daughter.
“Our hearts and condolences go out to the entire Laird family, their friends and coworkers,” Christiansen said. “We’re very grateful for his service to the agency and to our nation.”
