Chief Conversations: MSA debuts new XF1–
This video series is brought to you by Globe and MSA. View the other videos in the series here. By FireRescue1 Staff FireRescue1 Executive Editor Chief Marc Bashoor speaks with Eric Buzard, fire service marketing manager for MSA, about the features in the new MSA Cairns XF1 helmet, from multiple adjustment points, to easily removable soft components, as well as integrated lighting and communications. Bashoor asks how reception has been to the non-traditional jet helmet shape of the XF1, which Buzard says has been warm. Buzard related the “light switch moment” when he realized the need for a streamlined helmet, when he came across a motor vehicle accident with firefighters on scene, and witnessed three firefighter helmets sitting on top of the car, obviously not being worn during the rescue operation.
Chief Conversations: IAFC Southeast Division top issues–
This video series is brought to you by Globe and MSA. View the other videos in the series here. By FireRescue1 Staff FireRescue1 Executive Editor Chief Marc Bashoor speaks with Kingman D. Schuldt, CFO, president of the IAFC’s Southeastern Association of Fire Chiefs, and chief, Greater Naples Fire Rescue District, FL about the relationship between the divisions and the parent organization in IAFC. “The divisions serve such an important role in bridging the gap between the local communities and the state organizations to the international programs,” Shuldt notes. We really try to focus as a division to take those messages, those needs, those wants, desires of the local fire services at the state level and take them up to the international level. Shuldt and Bashoor discuss the hot button issues in the Southeast division, which reflect the core values in the greater fire service: cancer presumption, mental health and wellness, PTSD, safe haven for newborns and fire prevention.
Chief Conversations: FirstNet ready–
This video series is brought to you by Globe and MSA. View the other videos in the series here. By FireRescue1 Staff FireRescue1 Executive Editor Chief Marc Bashoor speaks with Hank Clemmensen, past president, IAFC, and FirstNet consultant, about what fire chiefs need to know about FirstNet and how to get where they need to be to onboard. Clemmensen tells Bashoor about how IAFC and public safety organizations lobbied Congress after the communication failures involved in 9/11 to make improvements that would provide public safety professionals with a “dependable and reliable” spectrum. These efforts led to the creation of FirstNet in 2012, which is now available to help the fire service solve its unique challenges.
Chief Conversations: Innovations and unique solutions to industry problems–
This video series is brought to you by Globe and MSA. View the other videos in the series here. By FireRescue1 Staff Brad Harvey, senior application engineer at 3M-Scott, sits down with FR1 Executive Editor Chief Marc Bashoor at Fire Rescue International to discuss the importance of innovation in the fire service and how 3M-Scott is working to make firefighter safer on the job. Through extensive research and development, 3M-Scott is offering different solutions to industry solutions by reframing the problem. Harvey compares it to shopping at a home improvement store. "Somebody goes to the local home improvement store, and they go their to buy a quarter-inch drill bit, but that's not what they're trying to do," he tells Bashoor. "What they're trying to accomplish is a quarter-inch hole, and there's a lot of ways you can get a quarter-inch hole. A drill bit is the only thing you're familiar with, so that's what you go buy." In other words, "rather than talk about the solution that's desired, talk about the problem that's trying to be solved," Harey says.

This video series is brought to you by Globe and MSA. View the other videos in the series here. By FireRescue1 Staff FireRescue1 Executive Editor Chief Marc Bashoor sits down with Fire Department Safety Officers Association Executive Director Rich Marinucci at Fire Rescue International to discuss the latest FDSOA programs and initiatives. The primary goal of the FDSOA is to provide programs that make being a firefighter safer, whether it’s on the fireground, or through maintaining their health and lifestyle Marinucci notes. “We talk often about “everybody goes home at the end of the call,” but our real goal is not only to go home safely but to be able to last well into your retirement,” Marinucci tells Bashoor.
Chief Conversations: Mentoring in the fire service–
This video series is brought to you by Globe and MSA. View the other videos in the series here. By FireRescue1 FireRescue1 Executive Editor Chief Marc Bashoor speaks with Fairfax County, Virginia, Chief John Butler at Fire Rescue International 2018 about the importance of mentoring in the fire service. Butler, who is a former Marine and was previously the Fire Chief in Howard County, Maryland, tells Bashoor, "Mentoring is the secret sauce to any public safety institution, the military and business in general. This is the most effective way to transfer knowledge from one generation to the other and across the institutions." Butler also notes the influence of the milennial generation on older industry professionals, in a reverse-mentorship capacity, particularly due to their fluency with technology. "Some of that technology can play well in to what we do and how we've done things in the past," he says.
Chief Conversations: Long-term funding of federal grant programs–
This video series is brought to you by Globe and MSA. View the other videos in the series here. By FireRescue1 Staff FireRescue1 Executive Editor Chief Marc Bashoor speaks with U.S. Fire Administrator G. Keith Bryant at Fire Rescue International about the six-year reauthorization of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) and SAFER grant programs approved by President Trump. According to Bryant, there is an average of $350 million set aside for each program, but those numbers could go up. "So far what we're seeing in the Senate and House markups of the budget, they'll stay about where they're at," he tells Bashoor. "But, the indication is there that there might be some additional funding for the Urban Search and Rescue Program and the Urban Areas Security Initative.'

This video series is brought to you by Globe and MSA. View the other videos in the series here. By FireRescue1 Staff FireRescue1 Executive Editor Chief Marc Bashoor speaks with Spartan Chief Operating Officer Tom Ninneman about firefighter safety on the road and how the company is working to make cabs safer. "The data shows that cab safety and firefighter safety is paramount," Ninneman tells Bashoor. "The second-leading cause of line-of-duty injuries remains vehicle collisions, and we're really focused on how that firefighter experience in the cab is safe, and we're building on that every day." Ninneman touts Spartan apparatus features, from the steps up into the rig, to the width of the doors and additions to the advanced protection system, which include the biggest frontal airbag in the industry.
