Former IAFC section chair dies

McLEAN, Va. — Chief Charles Flynn, the immediate past chair of the IAFC Volunteer & Combination Officers Section, died Wednesday, the IAFC announced.

Flynn had been an active IAFC and IAFC New England Division Member since 2005. He served as co-president of the New England Division from 2020 through 2021 and as chair of the Volunteer & Combination Officers Section from 2018 through February 2024.

IAFC President John Butler says Flynn left behind a legacy of “exceptional service and unwavering commitment to the fire service community.”

Chief Rich Cowger, the current VCOS chair, described Flynn “as cherished mentor and friend to many, not just within the VCOS board, but also in the broader fire service community.”
