TORONTO — Ministry of Labor officials will not issue any charges in connection with the death of a firefighter student during an ice-rescue training exercise.
CTV News reported that Adam Brunt, 30, a firefighting student from Ontario, died during a training exercise on Feb. 8, 2015. He was taking the course to improve his resume before looking for a job.
While conducting a rescue scenario on the Saugeen River, he got trapped under ice in a fast-flowing current and drowned.
A ministry spokesperson said no charges are being filed is because Brunt was a trainee of Herschel Rescue Training Systems and not a worker. As a result, his death did not fall under the ministry’s purview.
Police also declined to file charges in connection with Brunt’s case. Following his death, officials announced plans to tighten regulations on companies providing safety training for firefighters.
