Judge: Houston firefighters’ ‘equal pay’ petition must be reviewed

The ruling mandates that the city secretary counts the signatures on a petition that calls for pay parity between firefighters and police officers

HOUSTON — A petition created by Houston firefighters over the pay disparity between the fire and police department was ordered by a court ruling to be reviewed by the city secretary.

Click 2 Houston reported that Harris County District Court Judge Dan Hinde sided with Houston Professional Fire Fighters Association president Patrick Lancton, who sued city secretary Anna Russell to count and verify the petition signatures.

Lancton sued Russell last year to report her findings of the petition that calls for equal pay between firefighters and police officers to the city council, since negotiations to increase the pay scales have not been successful.

Houston police officer cadets currently make around $14,000 more than firefighter trainees.

Officials said the ruling could potentially pave the way for allowing residents to vote on whether firefighters should receive equal pay.
