Iowa firefighter dies in collision between responding apparatus

An Ionia firefighter was thrown from a department UTV when it was struck by a fire engine

IONIA, Iowa — An Ionia firefighter responding to a brush fire On Oct. 22, was killed when two firefighting vehicles passed a tractor and then collided with each other.

One of the vehicles was a UTV that had been converted for firefighting. The other was a firetruck. While responding, the UTV passed a tractor, and the firetruck followed. The firetruck then collided with the rear of the UTV, sending it out of control and rolling over, The Gazette reported.

The Iowa State Patrol told KWWL that the UTV rolled over and the driver was thrown out of the vehicle.

The Ionia Fire Department posted on Facebook that Firefighter Tony Hoffman was flown to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota where he later died.
