COVINGTON COUNTY, Miss. — Tragedy struck on Wednesday afternoon when a Seminary Volunteer Fire Department firefighter succumbed to his injuries after being struck while responding to a crash on U.S. Highway 49.
Phillip Allan, who was off duty at the time, came across the accident scene and stopped to render assistance. As he was walking across the northbound lanes of U.S. 49 a vehicle traveling in the same direction struck him, WDAM reported.
According to the Mississippi Highway Patrol, Allan was transported to Forrest General Hospital where he died from his injuries.
The driver who hit Allan remained on the scene.
The incident remains under investigation.
