BAYONNE, N.J. — A two-alarm fire broke out in a Bayonne senior apartment tower Tuesday, leaving one woman dead and sending eight police officers and three residents to the hospital, according to authorities.

The woman, whose identity was not released, died after being taken to a local hospital, Weaver said. She was living in an apartment on the third floor of the 11-story Post Road Gardens Center.

The fire started inside that building, located on the 500 block of Avenue A in Bayonne, Fire Chief Keith Weaver said in a statement.

Firefighters were called to the building around 7:22 a.m., and found the third-floor apartment on fire, the chief said. Additional resources were summoned to care for the other occupants who evacuated.

The fire was under control by around 8:17 a.m.

The eight officers and three residents were taken to a hospital for smoke inhalation, Weaver said. The extent of their injuries was not immediately known.

Four other residents were treated at the scene and declined further medical treatment.

Bayonne authorities are investigating the cause of the fire with the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office.
