NM fire chief ‘threatened members with gun’ during meeting

Chief reportedly showed up to meeting armed with body armor and led authorities on manhunt

VELARDE, NM — A fire chief in Rio Arriba County was arrested early Tuesday morning after he led authorities on a manhunt following a meeting at the Velarde Fire Station.

According to the Rio Arriba Sheriff’s Office, acting fire chief Darwin Yazzie of the community of Velarde showed up to a monthly meeting for volunteer firefighters Monday night with an assault rifle, a hand gun. Witnesses said he was wearing body armor.

Rio Arriba sheriff’s said Yazzie made threats to at least four firefighters and pulled out the handgun. Some firefighters took cover while others were able to talk Yazzie down, officials said.
