LAGO VISTA, Texas — Driver/Operator Dylan Fischer was supposed to have the second half of his shift off so he could get married on Monday, Valentine’s Day, but staffing has been so strained that he could not.

But his co-workers at Travis County Emergency Services District #1 organized a wedding at the station in under two hours so he and his bride, Nina, would have their special day.

Battalion Chief Brittney Garner told KXAN that the minimum staff number is 19, and many were out because of COVID-19 and a big fire on Sunday.

Fischer had been on the scene of that fire early Monday and mentioned that it was supposed to be his wedding day.

“My heart just hurt for him,” Garner said.

So the responders made a wedding happen, and family members showed up. Within about 20 minutes, the two were married, they had a cake cutting and a bouquet toss.
