PENN VALLEY, Calif. — Volunteer Firefighter Chelsea Kirksey with the Rough and Ready Fire Department fought her first structure fire last Friday. Responding to a call in Penn Valley, Kirksey and her fellow firefighters saved a home after an electrical panel caught fire and threatened to burn down the residence. Kirksey’s day job is at the Penn Valley Northridge restaurant and she missed the start of her shift at 5:00 p.m., because she was fighting the fire. When she arrived at work later that evening, she was put on a one week suspension.
Carlos Delcid, the owner of the Penn Valley Northridge confirmed Kirksey’s suspension during a phone call today. He stated the restaurant “had big reservations that day and she didn’t call to let us know... My manager put her on a week’s suspension, she needs to let us know next time if she’s not coming into work.”
Delcid said Kirksey’s phone wasn’t working but insisted she should have borrowed a phone from someone and called him. “She didn’t call or text, that’s not OK.” He stated he was worried when she didn’t show up for work and that everyone working at the restaurant was “like a big family.”
