CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Three cats – and a dog – were rescued from a blazing Huntersville home Wednesday, but a firefighter was burned in the process, according to the Huntersville Fire Department.
The injured firefighter was transported to Carolinas Medical Center in Huntersville for treatment of the burns, which were minor, officials said. The firefighter’s identity was not immediately released.
Huntersville officials said the fire started around 11 a.m. Wednesday, at a single-story home on the 8100 block of Maxwell Drive, off Sam Fur Road. Images show flames reaching through the roof, 20 or more feet into the air.
Firefighters said one cat was rescued from the home, but later sent out a tweet saying two additional cats and a dog were found inside. Oxygen was administer to the cats, with the help of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Animal Care and Control, officials said.
“Pets are family too, that’s how we roll,” said a tweet from the Huntersville Fire Department.
The cats were not burned, but were “wet and dirty (and suffered) smoke inhalation,” said the fire department. The there were taken in by Animal Care and Control, according to the Observer’s news partner WBTV.
The home was “ a total loss,” officials said. A cause of the fire was not released Wednesday afternoon.
