GRINDSTONE, Pa. — A fire captain who was charged with fatally shooting a junior firefighter over the weekend was granted bail Wednesday.
Republic Fire Capt. George Anthony Matis Jr., 21, was released after posting his $50,000 bail, reported the Tribune Live.
Capt. Matis has been charged with criminal homicide after his firearm discharged inside the fire station, which killed 16-year-old firefighter Parker Hess. Officials stated Matis owned the gun and had a valid concealed carry permit.
Hess sustained a gunshot wound to his cheek and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Despite the charges, District Attorney Richard Bower called the incident “involuntary manslaughter,” and said Hess’ death was not caused by an intentional act.
Capt. Matis’ preliminary hearing will be Dec. 7.
