Fla. residents call for firefighters’ reinstatement

The majority of the council vowed to adopt a fire assessment next month that would save 11 firefighter jobs

AVON PARK, Fla. — Quiet Avon Park getting rowdy ... again.

“Boo!” Residents clearly annoyed that city council wanted to pass the 2016 budget without funding a fully staffed fire department. Only one council member was ready to take action this night.

“We can change the budget right now in such a way that we will fully funding for the fire department all 15 firefighters whether the fire assessment passes or not,” said Councilman Garrett Anderson. It’s been a contentious issue for months in this small Highlands County community. Council didn’t approve a fire assessment fee this year and cut 11 firefighters. The fee could be re-imposed and will be discussed in three weeks, but fire crews are distrustful.
