CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — A captain in the Chattanooga Fire Department was arrested twice in less than 24 hours in connection with an alleged domestic assault incident.
Capt. Kelvin Strickland, 49, has been placed on leave without pay, fire department spokesman Bruce Garner said.
Strickland was first arrested at his home on Ivy Street at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday after his wife said Strickland attacked her while she was in bed. She said Strickland stood over her and cursed at her, then began to hit her in the face and choke her, according to court records.
She told police she kicked Strickland away and he fell to the floor, striking his face. His wife then called police. She said he had been drinking heavily lately.
Strickland was arrested again Wednesday for violating the terms of his release from the day before, according Chattanooga police.
Strickland, who has been a firefighter for 17 years and was assigned to the training division, will remain on leave until the case is resolved in court, Garner said.
He does not have any other criminal charges on his record in Hamilton County.
Strickland’s arrests come just a few days after a Chattanooga police officer was arrested on a domestic violence charge. Officer Leroy Wright was arrested May 12 after he admitted to pushing and pulling his girlfriend during a fight over a purse.
