DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. — A cellphone battery exploded Tuesday and left an elementary student with a minor leg burn, firefighters said.

It happened around 10:20 a.m. at Deerfield Park Elementary School.

The student, a 9-year-old boy, told firefighters his phone, a Coolpad 3622A, was beeping and making noises so to silence it, he took the battery out.

After he did, he tried to put the battery in his pocket but it fell and hit the floor. The boy noticed a hole in the battery and put it in his pocket. About a about a minute later, the battery ignited in his pocket.

The student threw the battery to the floor. Several hundred students and their teachers were briefly evacuated from the school, Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue spokesman Mike Jachles said.

The battery was so hot that it partially melted through the linoleum floor, he said.

The third grade student who suffered minor burns wasn’t taken to the hospital and didn’t require treatment, Jachles said.

The Florida Bureau of Arson and Fire Investigation will look into the fire.
