PORTLAND, Ore. — A Port of Portland firefighter indicted in the alleged sexual assault of a female colleague during a 2014 work trip to Texas was fired last week after an internal investigation found he violated the Port’s work policy and ordinances.

Jason McCann, who had worked for the Port for eight years, was fired Aug. 17 and had been on leave since October 2014, said Port spokesman Steve Johnson. He said the agency would not release any more information on its findings.

McCann, 37, was indicted earlier this month on one count of sexual assault in Tarrant County, Texas, according to a county court clerk. Messages left for Paige Simpson, a Tarrant County assistant district attorney prosecuting the case, and messages at numbers listed for McCann have not been returned.

The Port agreed in April to pay $325,000 in a settlement to McCann’s colleague, a 10-year firefighter. The woman, 39, resigned from the agency that same month. Her husband, a Port of Portland Fire & Rescue battalion chief, received a $15,000 settlement that same month after he filed a separate claim for stress and anxiety while on the job.

McCann and his co-worker were among about a dozen Port firefighters who attended FAA training in Texas last September.

Settlement documents say the alleged sexual assault occurred on Sept. 29. McCann was placed on paid leave three days later, Johnson said, and began unpaid leave on Nov. 27 until he was fired last week.
