ROANOKE, Va. — A house in the 1100 block of Orange Avenue burned in the early hours of Saturday morning after candles were left unattended, fire officials say. A release from Roanoke Fire & EMS said crews found heavy flames in the back of the two-story building, a boarding house, when they responded to the fire at 3:07a.m.

The 32 firefighters contained the blaze by 4a.m., but the building sustained an estimated $100,000 in damage, according to the release. Five people were in the building when the fire started in a first-floor apartment. No one was hurt, and firefighters rescued a cat.

An American Red Cross release said the organization is providing meals, clothing and hotel accommodations for six people - three families - displaced by the blaze. Roanoke Fire & EMS reminds people to use candles with care and practice emergency plans in case of a fire.
