Daughter of firefighter alerts family to house fire

Everyone made it out safely after she heard the alarm and alerted her parents

SWAMPSCOTT, Mass. — The 6-year-old daughter of a firefighter alerted her family early Tuesday to a fire inside their home, a blaze that eventually consumed the house and at least one car.

Boston Globe reported that the name of the firefighter was not immediately released, but Swampscott Fire Captain Mark Ryan said his colleagues are planning to open an account to help him and his family recover from the devastating fire.

Capt. Ryan said she heard the smoke alarm sounding inside the house before 5 a.m. and notified her parents to the danger.

“She heard the alarm and alerted the parents,’’ Capt. Ryan said. “They were able to make it out safely.’’

Capt. Ryan said that the fire was fast moving and that flames were pouring from the house when firefighters arrived.

“On arrival, it was fully involved,” he said. A second alarm was quickly struck, bringing in mutual aid units.

The combined force brought the fire under control, but not before it had consumed the house, which was a total loss, according to the report.

The firefighter was at home and was scheduled to return to work this morning.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
