WADENA, Saskatchewan — Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation and the neighbouring village of Loon Lake in northern Saskatchewan have restored their firefighting agreement after two toddlers died in a house fire last month.
The First Nation has paid the money it owed the village for previous firefighting services, Loon Lake Mayor Larry Heon told QMI Agency on Thursday, and signed a new contract for future services.
Harley Cheenanow, 2, and Haley Cheenanow, 18 months, died in a house fire on Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation in the early hours of Feb. 17. Emergency dispatch notified the Loon Lake volunteer fire department of the blaze, but no firefighters went because services to the First Nation had been suspended due to non-payment.
