MT. LEBANON, Pa. — Mt. Lebanon may relax the residency requirement for its volunteer firefighters so members who move away aren’t automatically barred from participating.
The commission introduced a bill last week that would allow up to six active volunteers to move outside Mt. Lebanon’s 6-square-mile municipal limits, provided they have been members at least two years, have and maintain at least a Firefighter II certification from a national agency, live within 12 miles of the station and can still meet the minimum requirements for drills and participating in calls for service.
Commissioners are scheduled to vote on the bill at 8 p.m. May 26. Fire Chief Nick Sohyda said the measure would make it easier to attract and retain volunteers who might otherwise be discouraged from joining if they thought they might not remain in Mt. Lebanon for the long term.
