DETROIT, Mich. — With protesters picketing outside the courthouse, the first hearing in Detroit’s bankruptcy proceedings began Wednesday morning.
U.S. District Judge Steven Rhodes is hearing arguments on motions to stay lawsuits challenging the bankruptcy filing.
The city’s pension systems and others have filed a lawsuit seeking to halt the proceedings because the pensions of Detroit employees and retirees will be at risk under bankruptcy despite being protected by Michigan law. Firefighters and activists were outside the courthouse demonstrating before the hearing began.
