AUGUSTA, Maine — Fire departments around the state have long-struggled with a shortage of volunteer firefighters. Lawmakers are considering a bill that would give people an incentive to donate their time.
The bill would allow cities and towns to give volunteer firefighters a $750 property tax credit for their service. Firefighters can’t enter a burning building unless they have enough manpower. Often, they have to wait until mutual aid shows up while the fire spreads and causes more damage.
The Maine Municipal Association opposes the bill because municipalities already have the authority to compensate firefighters. They say firefighters should not be treated differently than any other municipal volunteers.
