LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — A Pulaski County jury has convicted a man of second-degree murder in the death of a Jacksonville firefighter who was struck by a van the man was driving.
The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports the jury deliberated about three hours Thursday before finding 49-year-old Bryce Allen guilty of two counts of second-degree criminal attempt to commit murder. He has been sentenced to a total of 70 years. This includes 30 years for second degree murder, 20 years for the first count of criminal intent, and 20 years for the second count of criminal intent.
Allen was charged with first-degree murder in the March 19, 2012 collision that killed Jacksonville Fire Department Capt. Donald Jones. He was also charged with injuring fire engineer Jason Bowmaster and police officer Daniel DiMatteo in the collision at the scene of an accident on Arkansas 161 in Jacksonville.
Allen had pleaded insanity and defense attorneys argued that he was impaired by bipolar disorder at the time of the collision.
