The man was rushed to the hospital with serious head injuries; no firefighters were injured

SAN FRANCISCO — A bicyclist remained hospitalized Sunday following a serious collision with a city fire engine over the weekend in San Francisco’s Tenderloin.

The cyclist, a man in his 30s who was not identified, collided with the truck around 2:15 a.m. Saturday at Turk and Mason streets, Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White said.

The man was rushed to San Francisco General Hospital with “pretty serious head injuries,” Hayes-White said. No firefighters were injured in the wreck.

It was not immediately clear who was at fault in the crash, but the firefighter behind the wheel of Engine 1 was tested for alcohol and drugs, both of which came back negative, Hayes-White said.

The truck had been out on a call and was returning to the station southbound on Mason without its lights or sirens on. That’s when it collided at the signaled intersection with the bicyclist, who was heading westbound on Turk only a few yards from Market Street, police said.

The truck was back in operation at Fire Station No. 1 at Folsom and Fifth streets, but no firefighters who were working during the wreck were on duty Sunday morning. Firefighters referred all questions to the department’s spokeswoman, who was not available Sunday.

The site of the crash is a busy corner during the day with a restaurant, hotel, consignment shop and several other establishments lining the street. Most of the businesses were closed during the time of the crash, but the corner is lined with security cameras, which may have captured the episode.

San Francisco police were investigating the circumstances of the collision, but a spokeswoman with the department did not have further details about what happened.
