Officials: Ind. firefighter’s mask likely damaged before it failed

Chris McGrone was placed in a medically induced coma and is still recovering from his injuries; he has not yet returned to full duty

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — An internal investigation into the injury of an Indianapolis firefighter last August has determined his oxygen mask was likely damaged before he entered a burning home and breathed in levels of smoke that left him hospitalized in critical condition.

Firefighter Private Chris McGrone sustained the injuries while fighting a fire in the 1500 block of Columbia Avenue on Aug. 16. The fire was later labeled arson.

Doctors said McGrone breathed in critical levels of super-heated air and smoke, and he was placed in a medically induced coma in the intensive care unit at IU Health Methodist Hospital. McGrone is still recovering from his injuries and has not yet returned to full duty.
