EDISON, N.J. — About a dozen residents were rescued using ladders after a three-alarm fire tore through an Edison apartment complex on Wednesday night, officials said.

Authorities responded to a fire at an apartment complex on Marina Drive at 11:13 p.m. where they found multiple residents trapped and hanging from windows, according to Mayor Samip Joshi’s office.

Police officers and firefighters rescued 10 to 12 residents from Valley Manor Apartments using truck and ground ladders, officials said.

A woman who uses a wheelchair was transported to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital for smoke inhalation after being rescued from a window, officials said. She has since been released and is doing well.

“Our first responders performed with extraordinary professionalism and heroism under pressure,” Joshi said in a statement. “We are grateful to all of our crews who continuously work through the night.”

Twenty apartments were deemed uninhabitable following the blaze, and displaced residents were provided temporary living accommodations.

The American Red Cross responded to the scene and assisted seven people from two families, said Sheri Ferreira, regional communications manager.

The organization, which is coordinating with the Edison Office of Emergency Management, also expects to help around 33 residents from other units on Thursday.

The Red Cross offers residents necessities, including temporary lodging, food and clothing.

Officials said the cause of the fire remains under investigation, although it is not being treated as suspicious.

The township received 31 calls reporting public-safety-related incidents, such as structure fires and trees that fell on homes, from Wednesday evening to Thursday morning.
