BOSTON — A man who brought an inert mortar shell to a Boston Fire Department station in Brighton yesterday prompted fire officials to evacuate the building while bomb techs were called in to evaluate it.

Fire Department spokesman Steve MacDonald said the man -- whose name was not released -- drove what he believed was an old mortar shell to the Union Square firehouse around 11 a.m.

“The captain of the firehouse made a quick determination that this was a mortar in the backseat of a car,” MacDonald told the Herald. “He immediately ordered the firehouse evacuated.”

The firefighters at Engine 41 Ladder 14 called the Boston Police Department’s Explosive Ordinance Unit, commonly called the “Bomb Squad,” to evaluate the device, MacDonald said. After about 30 minutes, police determined the device was not explosive. No one was injured.

MacDonald said the incident should serve as a reminder that if someone finds an object they believe is an explosive, the safest course of action is to call the experts.

“We would recommend to never move or touch any device one feels may be explosive,” he said. “Call the police right away, then stay away from it.”
