VALLEJO, Calif. — A driver of a semi-truck failed to negotiate a right-hand turn and toppled a fire hydrant at Tennessee Street and Broadway about 9 a.m. Thursday.

The broken fire hydrant sent water shooting 25 feet into the air for about 30 minutes, and temporarily flooded a portion of the intersection.

The semi-truck’s driver, who was enrolled in a truck driving school out of Brentwood, was traveling south on Broadway and trying to turn right onto Tennessee Street, Vallejo Police Sgt. Kevin Hamrick said.

He clipped the fire hydrant that sits near the corner, requiring city public works crews to maneuver an underground valve to shut off the water.

Former truck driver David Lantz of Napa who watched the incident said the driver should have stopped when it was obvious he wasn’t going to make the turn correctly.

Hamrick said he hadn’t yet decided if the driver will be cited.
