BENSHEIM, Germany — A volunteer firefighting crew rescued a fat rat who was stuck in a manhole cover.

BBC News reported that firefighters were called to the scene to help a chubby rat who got stuck halfway while trying to get out of a sewer.

“She had a lot of winter flab and was stuck fast at her hip - there was no going forward or back,” animal expert Michael Sehr, who works for a local animal rescue group, said.

Eight firefighters and Sehr used a pole to hold the plump rat still while they lifted the manhole cover and released the animal, according to the animal rescue group’s Facebook page.

Some questioned why firefighters and the rescue group put so much effort into the rescuing of an animal that is usually exterminated, to which Sehr replied, “Even animals that are hated by many deserve respect.”
