GAYLORD, Mich. — A firefighter became trapped inside of a burning apartment building Friday after the roof collapsed.
According to a Facebook post, the Otsego County Fire Department was battling an apartment blaze when an evacuation was ordered just before the roof collapsed.
“Two of three firefighters cleared the front of the structure immediately prior to the collapse,” the department said. “The third firefighter initially could not be located.”
The department added that crews tried to cool the debris “in the event the firefighter was trapped under it,” but he made contact with his radio and alerted crews that he was OK.
“As soon as the smoke cleared, the firefighter was located safely inside the door,” the department said. The debris was cleared enough to remove the firefighter. “All personnel were safe and full accountability was maintained. Thank you to all hands, including EMS and police for their assistance during the mayday call and throughout the incident.”
