TOLEDO, Ohio — A Toledo man was arrested and is being charged with aggravated robbery for holding up a store and pointing a gun at the owner and deputy fire chief.
Domanshay Willis, 20, was found hiding at 527 E. Streicher St., shortly after allegedly robbing Our Food Market, 454 E. Streicher, in North Toledo, said police Sgt. Joe Heffernan. Sergeant Heffernan said officers were able to “trace” the suspect to the residence. The suspect was arrested without incident.
Toledo fire Deputy Chief Rick Syroka was inside the carryout discussing with Mohammad “Mike” Abaza, the store owner, a fire that had occurred hours earlier at the back of the store when a man came in, walked around the store, and pointed a gun at the two men. He forced the deputy chief and Mr. Abaza behind the counter and demanded cash.
The suspect fled. No injuries were reported.
Chief Syroka was in uniform at the time of the robbery, speaking to the store owner about a fire that occurred there this morning. The chief’s unmarked black city-issued sport-utility vehicle was parked outside of the store with its emergency lights flashing.
Fire Lt. Matthew Hertzfeld said the fire at the store started at 2:37 a.m. today. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Deputy Chief Syroka declined to comment.
Mr. Abaza, while working at the carryout, has been shot in at least two different incidents -- once each in 2010 and 2011 -- by store robbers.
