Fire capt. calls dead driver ‘idiot’ on Facebook

The fire chief said he was shocked and offended by the post; the firefighter later issued an apology

BRAMTPON, Ontario — A fire captain apologized Monday after posting an inappropriate Facebook post about a recent call involving a tow truck driver.

CP24.com reported that the firefighter took to his personal Facebook page to post a link about a crash in which a tow truck driver died after his vehicle was struck by a train.

The tow truck driver responded to a three-vehicle collision on Friday at a rail crossing and parked on the tracks when he moved his truck for fire trucks. When he realized his truck was in the path of an incoming train, he hopped back in, attempted to move it but didn’t make it in time.

In the post, which was since been deleted, the firefighter asked, “Are all GTA tow truck drivers f**** idiots?” and went on to say, “Ya buddy, at least you only hurt yourself this time and inconvenienced everybody else.”

Fire Chief Michael Clark said he was “shocked and offended” by the post.

The firefighter later stated that he was unaware that the driver had lost his life and expressed his sincere apologies and condolences to the victim’s friends and family.

“I don’t know what his personal issue is with tow truck operators but speaking for myself and his colleagues we see the tow trucks operators as our partners and we have a good working relationship with them,” Chief Clark said. “I really don’t know where this originated and we are as shocked and surprised by this as anyone else.”
