BALTIMORE — A week after a fatal Baltimore fire killed five people, firefighters have been advocating fire safety and have been installing smoke alarms for the city’s residents.
Last week, a house fire killed four children and their grandmother and injured two firefighters.
In the wake of the blaze, firefighters spent the weekend reminding residents of fire safety tips, like not leaving food on a stove, and to be mindful of smoking materials, according to WBAL.
Officials said that any city residents who want a smoke alarm installed in their home can call the fire department and a firefighter will arrive within two hours to install one on every level of the home free of charge.
Fire Chief James Clack said that these are preventative measures that may help save future lives.
“To lose one life is too much, but to lose five lives in one fire, to me it’s nearly unconscionable. So we want to try and avoid this from reoccurring ever again,” he said.
