BOAZ, Ala. — The fire chief of Boaz no longer holds that position.
Mike Sparks was terminated at Monday night’s city council meeting. He had been on leave with pay for the last two weeks. At the meeting, city officials said they were seeking Sparks’ termination for “betrayal of trust.” Officials claimed Sparks conducted the willful taping of conversations of parties without their knowledge during promotion hearings on July 22.
His attorney argued that three of the council members were witness to the recordings, that the personnel director knew he recorded previous meetings, and there was nothing on Sparks’ record to suggest he should be immediately terminated.
