AURORA, Colo. — The house on the corner of South Catawba Circle is just like any home in the Murphy Creek area of southeast Aurora. There’s a white picket fence with a spacious backyard, and brick runs halfway up the structure.
Only at this house, there’s an extremely tall garage with a shiny-red fire engine parked inside. Inside the home, four firefighters go about their chores, whether it’s cooking a meal or doing laundry.
Welcome to Aurora Fire Station No. 15, a temporary “firehouse” in a residential community surrounding a golf course. The fire station has been there for seven years. It is the Aurora Fire Department’s only station inside a residential home. The developer of Murphy Creek provided the home, while the city of Aurora staffs and maintains the station. The arrangement is a perfect fit: That area of the city gets a fire station without having to build a new one, and residents there have first responders who react quickly.
