FRESNO, Calif. — Three Fresno firefighters rescued a beautiful bride on Sunday — not from a fire, but rather a flower and wedding cake emergency.
Fresno Fire Engine 13 responded around 2 p.m. to a report of woman having chest pains on the side of the road. The woman, a baker, was pulled over with hazard lights on in a large Sweet Dream Wedding Cakes and Flowers van when fire spokesman Keola Park, Capt. Domlin Juul and engineer Steve Stowe arrived at the scene.
“The lady was really stressed out,” Park said. “She was already running late.”
She was on her way to an evening wedding ceremony and the next delivery person was an hour away, Park told the Fresno Bee. They waited for an ambulance to arrive to transport her to the hospital for precautionary measures.
“The patient was really concerned about the delivery of the flowers and wedding cake,” Park said. So firefighters asked permission from their supervisor to make the delivery themselves.
“He gave us the OK,” Park said.
Stowe hopped into the van, and Park followed in the fire engine as they greeted some very surprised wedding guests, and bride and groom.
“They had that look of ‘why is a fire engine here,’” Park said. But confusion turned to excitement once the men began unloading glass vases full of pink, orange and yellow blossoms, as well as a three-tier cake. The wedding photographer clicked away as the videographer caught it on film, and the bride thanked the firefighters.
“She told us to come back later for cake, but we had to get back to work,” Park said.
It was definitely Park’s first wedding ceremony save.
“It was pretty cool,” Park said. But it also meant a lot for the health and well-being of the baker.
“Maybe,” he said “her situation could have been much worse if she [continued to be] worried.”
