Jackson Fire Lt. Yancey Williams was shot and killed late Sunday night

JACKSON, Miss. — A Mississippi firefighter was fatally shot during a robbery at a gas station late Sunday night.

Jackson Fire Lt. Yancey Williams, 36, was killed in the shooting, which occurred shortly before midnight, according to WLBT. Police have arrested a suspect in the shooting, according to Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our own, Jackson Firefighter Lieutenant Yancey Williams, who is remembered for his hard work and dedication to the Jackson Fire Department,” Lumumba said in a statement. “He served as a firefighter since 2013 and was recently promoted to the rank of Lieutenant.”

The Jackson Police Department wrote on Twitter Monday morning that Williams’ vehicle had been taken from the scene of the shooting. They have not released details about the suspect in custody.
