SOMERTON, Ariz. — Two Yuma County residents who are being sued in Superior Court by Rural/Metro Fire Department say the firefighting agency is unfairly billing them for emergency services they didn’t request.

For Susan Roff-Fuquay, May 5, 2011, remains vivid in her mind because on that day a fire that started in an alley south of her property and destroyed her mobile home and an attached structure. But the bigger surprise, she said, came later in the mail when she received a bill from Rural Metro for $25,675.

A widow on a fixed income, Roff-Fuquay says she not only can’t afford the bill but that she is being charged excessively. “In the report of the incident, 19 firefighters were there, but they are charging me for the salaries of 24.” Also facing a lawsuit is Maria Rascon, a widow whose mobile home in the La Mesa residential subdivision near Somerton was destroyed by a fire April 4, 2011, to which Rural Metro also responded.
