VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich. — Firefighters from six departments battled a fire Monday, Dec. 2, at an apartment building near South Haven.

The occupants safely escaped.

The fire was reported around 6:05 p.m. at Pitcher Lake Apartment on 62nd Street south of County Road 388 in Van Buren County’s Geneva Township.

Firefighters battled deep snow while fighting the fire and shuttling water tankers to a pond at the nearby GingerMan Raceway.

Cold weather is brutal on firefighting equipment and even more so on firefighters

South Haven Area Emergency Services, or SHAES, said that the fire was believed to have started in an unoccupied apartment and spread to the attic.

The Southwest Michigan Chapter of the American Red Cross was called to help residents displaced by the fire.

SHAES firefighters were assisted by firefighters from the cities of Bangor, Hartford and Watervliet and townships of Columbia and Covert.
