JACKSON, Miss. — A Jackson firefighter is dead after a shooting during a domestic dispute, police said.

Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade said Tammy Williams, 41, barricaded herself inside the home on April 7 after investigators said she shot veteran firefighter Gerald “Buster” Bates, WAPT reported.

Police had initially responded to the home for a call about an unresponsive person.

Officers negotiated with Williams for over an hour while she carried a gun throughout the house. Eventually, a SWAT team deployed tear gas before forcing entry into the home and taking Williams into custody.

Bates also served with the Byram Fire Department.
