BALTIMORE — A woman was seriously injured when she fell and became trapped in a manhole early Sunday, according to the Baltimore Fire Department.

She fell 10 feet down into the manhole at Pearle and West Lexington streets about 4:30 a.m. and had to be pulled out by firefighters, one of whom was injured during the rescue, department spokesman Samuel Johnson said.

The woman was hospitalized in serious condition; the firefighter was treated for his injuries.

Johnson did not elaborate on the circumstances of the incident, such as whether the manhole cover was off, and what caused the woman to fall.
