KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Three children were rescued from a fire inside an illegal apartment near downtown Kansas City.

The fire was reported shortly before 2 a.m. on May 24 on the second floor of an abandoned, two-story commercial building near Truman Road and Park Avenue, FOX4KC reported.

“Typically on a commercial structure, one, two in the morning, you’re not expecting to find people,” Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins said. “You know, businesses are closed.”

As firefighters searched the building, they discovered what appeared to be storage doors. After forcing these doors open, they found an illegal apartment with three unattended children inside.

The children, aged 9, 4 and 2, were treated on the scene and transported to Children’s Mercy Hospital for smoke inhalation and carbon monoxide exposure.
