SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. — Two firefighters were burned Wednesday morning battling a two-alarm blaze that raced through a Carmichael home but four people inside escaped without serious injury.

Fire tore through the home on the 5700 block of La Field Drive about 8 a.m., sending Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District units to the scene on the Carmichael - Fair Oaks border. Inside the home were three adults, a child and several pets. As firefighters made their way through the crowded residence, intense heat in one of the rooms triggered a flash fire that overwhelmed fire crews battling the flames, said Battalion Chief Parker Wilbourn , a Metro Fire spokesman.

Step 1: Back out or attempt to isolate yourself in a room behind a closed door if retreat isn’t possible

Wilbourn described the scene: “With the amount of personal property inside, crews were challenged to maneuver and conduct their operations. At one point, everything in one of the rooms reached its ignition point temperature (generally greater than 1,000-1,200 degrees), and the room immediately flashed.”

Their mayday call brought help and a quick escape to safety as a second alarm called in reinforcements to join the fight. Two of the firefighters were taken to a hospital with burn injuries and were being evaluated, Wilbourn said.

The four people who lived in the home were evaluated by fire crews; three were hospitalized for smoke inhalation. Fire crews knocked down the blaze and contained it to the home, Wilbourn said. Several animals inside the home had not yet been located.
